~~** BLOG TOUR **~~ UPRISING (Outliers Sage, 2) by Kate L Mary

Uprising (Outliers Saga, 2)
by Kate L Mary

Genre: Adult Dystopian
Publisher: Twisted Press
Editor: Lori Whitwam

Publication Date: May 21st, 2018
Hosted by: Lady Amber’s PR

Blurb:
I stood by and let it happen for too long, but I will not do it anymore. I will not be the person who watches others get hurt and does nothing to stop it. Not anymore.

Returning to Sovereign City after everything that was stolen from her is something Indra never thought she would do. Despite the scars she wears both inside and out, left there at the hands of the Sovereign and the Fortis, she is determined to save her people from oppression, even if it means putting her own safety at risk. But it isn’t long before she once again finds her world shattering around her. As the dust settles, Indra manages to find strength among the ruins, and she sets out on a quest to unite the four Outlier tribes, hoping to take their enemies down once and for all.
Readers agree that Outliers is a “A brilliantly beautiful soul trembling story that has left me pining for more,” and that “Indra is the kind of dystopian protagonist I’m always searching for, but rarely find.”

My Review - I really enjoyed this story

A gripping and exciting follow up to Outliers

Uprising is the second instalment of the Outliers saga, a 'dystopian future' story of oppression and good triumphing (hopefully) over evil. I enjoyed the first book in the series and wanted to see how the trials and torments inflicted on Indra, in that book, led her to grow and change as a person. I wasn't sure how the story would continue but was pleasantly surprised at the direction it took.

Indra is a Winta, one of the four tribe of Outliers, born to serve the Sovereign and live in fear of the Fortis. However having been whipped to within an inch of her life, after watching the beheading of her husband Bodhi, Indra is not only no longer in fear of them but is determined to rain vengeance down on them both. However things are complicated by Asa, a Fortis who doesn't live to humiliate and subdue the Outliers. Can Indra free her people or will she only bring them and herself further pain and loss?

Indra felt quite young in the first book, almost NA, so I was surprised to discover she was in her mid twenties. However she has definitely grown and matured and came across as a strong and determined character. The book is written third person, entirely from her perspective but in a way that still allows us to learn and understand the other main characters in the book.

I loved getting to know more about Asa and the other tribes, as well as the Untouchables. The book held some very surprising plot twists and whilst it doesn't end in a traditional cliffhanger, it does leave me on tenterhooks and wondering where this story can possibly go now.

The book really held my attention from the start and I enjoyed the story from start to finish. Whilst it makes clear that two of the characters engage in a sexual relationship, this isn't described and I feel the book could be enjoyed by older teens as well as adults. This is a book I am happy to recommend to any who enjoy well written stories set in dystopian futures/ alternate worlds. I wouldn't describe it as either fantasy or sci-fi but it does seem to slot within that general genre.

Asa and I stood in silence for a moment before he said, “You’ve started down a very dangerous path, Indra. You have to know that. You’ve been lucky so far, but it can’t last. Eventually, one of the men you attack will get the better of you, and then you’ll get hurt.”
Anger flared through me then, replacing the fear that had been swimming in me since Asa came upon me in the forest yesterday. He knew I had already been hurt, in so many ways. He had seen it with his own eyes, had told me that my pain had hurt him as well, yet he had the nerve to say this to me.
“Hurt?” I found myself spitting the word at him. “I am getting hurt every day, Asa. You have seen it. You have seen what these men have done to me, to the people I love, to my tribe, and to all the other Outliers working in the city. I stood by and let it happen for too long, but I will not do it anymore. I will not be the person who watches others get hurt and does nothing to stop it. Not anymore.”
We stared at one another for a moment, each of us lost in our own pain, in the pain that was both for ourselves and for our people. I could see the battle raging in him, the one that pulled him in two different directions. Between me, a person he had come to care about, and his people. It was unfair to ask him to do this thing for me, to make a choice that went against who he was, but I could not turn back now, just as he could not change the fact that he had been born a Fortis. Those were his people, but I was an Outlier, and we had been fooling ourselves for too long. Our worlds were too different to mix. We were too different.
“I understand the things that have been done to you,” he finally said. “I understand your anger. But I’m looking out for you, Indra.”
“I know, but maybe it is time I learned to look out for myself,” I replied.
“Are you saying you don’t want my help anymore?” he asked, surprise and doubt clouding his vision.
I exhaled as the truth settled over me like a heavy weight. There was no way I could walk away from his help, not if I wanted to keep Mira safe.
“You know I cannot do that,” I finally said, “but you must also know I cannot turn my back on my people either. I will leave it up to you to decide what you must do from here. If you cannot live with the things I have done, the things I plan to continue to do, I will understand.” I stepped back, and it seemed as if a large canyon had opened up between us. I waved down at myself when I said, “This is who I am, Asa. That will not change.”
His brown eyes swept over me, softening even more. “I know who you are, Indra, and even if I don’t agree with it, I can’t turn my back on you now.”
For once, his assurances gave me no comfort. Asa and I were involved in an alliance which defied logic, and one which could not last. Eventually, something would happen that would cause him to turn his back on me, and when that time came, I was unsure of what would become of us. Of what I would be forced to do to not only save myself, but my people.

BOOK REVIEW ~~~~~BREATHE by Carly Phillips

Breathe by Carly Phillips

My Review

A warm, gentle and well written second-chance romance

I first met Phoebe in the first Rosewood Bay book, Fearless , and was intrigued enough to want to read her story. This can very much be read as a stand alone, any information needed to enjoy the story is included in this book. I've read a few books now by Carly Phillips so I know that, even if it isn't a 5 star read, it will still be a book that I will enjoy and want to finish.

This is a wonderful second-chance romance about Phoebe and Jake, who fell in love as teenagers in care, only to be ripped apart. Soon after Phoebe was rescued by and offered a home with her aunt. She left care with more than battered emotions, she left it pregnant with her son. Many years later Jack and Phoebe meet again and discover their emotions are just as strong as they ever were. Can they overcome their time spent apart, the hurdles life throws at them and their own fears and hang-ups, and find their HEA?

Jake and Phoebe are both very pleasant and likeable characters, with a strong connection and intense chemistry. Since this is second-chance I didn't mind how rapidly they connected and fell in love. The plot moves with good pace and had some nice little twists in it. The story is fairly low on angst and drama, resulting in a pleasant and relaxing read.

If you're a fan of Ms Phillips, or looking for a well written, stress-free contemporary romance then I'm sure you would enjoy this. It does have a some quite steamy scenes, though not to many to distract from the plot.

**** BOOK REVIEW **** LIMERENCE by Jackie Wang

LIMERENCE by Jackie Wang

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I couldn't put this down, even when it had me ugly crying

I can't remember how I first discovered this author, but I've read and enjoyed quite a few of her books. I really wasn't sure how I'd feel about this, I'm not usually the biggest fan of the New Adult genre, but decided to give it a go. Whilst I really enjoyed her Northbridge series, this has become my favourite Jackie Wang book. This is the first part of a trilogy and does end on a cliffhanger. There isn't any cheating in this book, nor would I describe it as a love triangle.

Tox (Knox) and Vic have been best friends since they were little, growing up more like brothers. In their senior year of high school they allow the awkward new girl in school, Cay, to join their little group. The book starts with them preparing to move on from high school, Tox is staying in Seattle, whilst Cay and Vic are heading to Harvard. Tox has harboured a secret crush on Cay and when he discovers Vic and Cay are going to be roommates he expects the worse....and isn't wrong. However it doesn't take much to turn a perfect situation into a nightmare.

It's very difficult to review the plot of this without giving away spoilers, so I'm going to keep my opinions very generalised. The first 60% of the story is from Tox's point of view and my word, keep a box of tissues handy. Tox broke my heart again and again, his emotions were so visceral yet he never felt weak or pathetic. Even when things were going well there was almost a sense of foreboding. I liked how the characters (aged 18 - 21) did feel a little immature and naive at times, yet never childish or annoying. I really liked them, even when I didn't like their actions....you'll understand what I mean when you read this.

At 60% we switch to Cay's POV and the story briefly backtracks over some events, giving us another perspective and filling in 'missing detail' from events that didn't involve Tox. I really liked Cay and although she seemed to lose herself in her final year of college I guess it wasn't too surprising given all that she was going through. If I have any criticism it would be that I would have liked more reason/evidence/scenes of how things were going wrong for them. It felt a little as though we went from sublimely happy to massively dissatisfied fairly rapidly, and whilst I could infer why, I personally wanted just a little more.

I read this in one evening, I simply didn't want to put it down. Whilst this isn't 'sweet' or 'clean', the love scenes are fairly minimal and fitted the story well. There is bad language but not excessively so, and again more in fitting with the ages of the characters and real life. If you are looking for a well written book that has great characters and all the feels I really do recommend this.

A riveting new adult trilogy about love, loss and chaos by bestselling author Jackie Wang.

BOOK REVIEW ~~~ ALPHA'S WAR by Renee Rose and Lee Savino

Alpha's War by Renee Rose & Lee Savino

FREE with #KindleUnlimited

My Review - I really liked this book

Wowsers this is one hot and steamy romance, with a decent story to boot

I've read a few of the Bad Boy Alpha books, which this links into though it can be read as a stand alone. I have enjoyed the books I have read so far, and wanted to continue with the story arch that runs in the background. One of the good things about the series is how different each story is. So whilst I knew to expect a well written story, I didn't know if it would be quite serious, light-hearted, full of angst or suspense.

The story involves one very messed up shifter, raised in a non-shifter environment so never knew his true roots, and a woman who will fight to protect her secret. Thrown into the mix are some shady bad guys who Nash and Denali have escaped from once, a secret agent with his own agenda and some scorching hot chemistry.

I really enjoyed Nash and Denali's story with it's angst, personal growth, suspense, banter, crazy supporting characters and smoking hot chemistry. Boy was this book steamy, yet unlike some books I didn't find the scenes excessive or too much. They helped build the intensity of the book and really showed the connection between Denali and Nash.

Nash's struggles were so well portrayed and my heart broke for him. I absolutely bought into the connection between him and Denali, I loved their dirty talk and Nash was so swoon-worthy in his adoration of her. Denali is an amazingly woman, retaining her strength and sense of self even as she submitted to her alpha mate. It was brilliant to see Declan, Laurie and Parker, those three make me laugh so much and I hope we see more of them in future books. Charlie was an intriguing addition, I can't wait to read his story.

There is a lot of sex in the book, as well as bad language and very dirty talk. If those things are likely to offend then this book is best avoided. However if you love a well written book with a dirty talking alpha, a woman who can stand up to him and a good plot then this is for you.

Synopsis

I'm coming for you, Denali...

Nash
I’ve survived suicide missions in war zones. Shifter prison labs. The worst torture imaginable. Nothing knocked me off my feet... until the beautiful lioness they threw in my cage. We shared one night before our captors ripped us apart.
Now I’m free, and my lion is going insane. He’ll destroy me from the inside out if I don’t find my mate.
I don’t know who she is. I don’t know where she lives. All I have is a video of her. But I’ll die if I don’t find her, and make her mine.
I’m coming for you, Denali.

Denali

But one night with a lion shifter destroyed me. Nash took the one thing my captors couldn’t touch—my heart.
Somehow I escaped, and live in fear that they will come for me. It’s killing my lioness, but I’ve got to hide--even from Nash. I’ve got to protect the one thing I have left to lose: our cub.

***********BOOK REVIEW************ FIDELITY WORLD: INVICTUS by Kylie Hillman

The Fidelity World: Invictus (Kindle Worlds Novella)

by Kylie Hillman

My Review - 5 stars

A captivating teaser prequel that left me begging for more

This is something a little different from Kylie Hillman, though it will be linking to the Centrifuge Duet, so it automatically became a 'must read' for me. I wasn't sure what to expect, normally the author writes books with quite a psychological element but I knew this book wasn't typical for her. What I found was that this had much more of a traditional contemporary feel, with finely crafted characters and the basis of one amazing plot.

Felix is a very reluctant king-in-waiting who jumps at the chance for a year off to discover himself. Once on the other side of the world he meets Ida, a girl with her own issues and secrets. Their connection is instantaneous but will it survive the truth?

Normally I'm not the biggest fan of novella's, but because this is a 'prequel' it worked. It allowed time for both world building and great character development. Whilst the ending isn't a dramatic cliffhanger, it does leave the story 'hanging'. I really liked Felix, he was both entitled and arrogant at times but then, as a crown prince, he would and should be both these things. His interactions with both Marco and Serge showed the man inside he could be and I'm looking forward to seeing him emerge.

Ida was fabulous, her decision to join Infidelity felt a little off, but given the circumstances I could understand her having been swept along with it all. Even in what was a fairly short read I was really drawn in by both characters and felt their emotion. My only complaint is that I will have to wait a short while to read the rest of their story.

Ida and Felix share an insane chemistry and we do get one steamy scene, it felt a little brief but I felt that was due to word count constraints rather than poor writing. In fact the writing is anything but poor, I flew through this book and wasn't distracted once. (Well apart from my kids having an argument but I left the room so I could focus on this book. Don't worry my hubs was there too!)

I would recommend this book to fans of Kylie, as well as those who are new to her work. I haven't read any other books from the Fidelity World but I can tell you that this one is excellent, although it will leave you begging for more.

Synopsis

Heavy is the head that wears the crown.

Having your entire life mapped out for you from birth has its perks, but it also comes with serious drawbacks.
For Ida Montoya, escaping her predetermined destiny means leaving behind everything she’s ever known and making her own way in the world. No more easy money. No motherly hugs to soothe her hurt. No soft place to fall when she messes it all up.
Felix Von Sonderberg—Crown Prince of a country he wishes he could change, son to a father he despises, future husband to a woman he’s never met—yearns to experience life out from under the shadow of his family name. For him, the offer of one year to do as he pleases, in a country where nobody knows him, seems like the perfect salve to his scarred soul.
Employing the services of a beautiful young woman to pander to his every whim during his year of freedom should be the perfect plan. All the fun with no strings to cut when the time comes to leave.
What could possibly go wrong?
Only everything. Ida might become the one thing he’s not willing to give up in order to have the heavy crown that has belonged to him since birth finally placed upon his head.

Note from the Author:
Felix Von Sonderberg will also appear in the brand-new spin-off series to the bestselling Centrifuge Duet, Full Circle Security Incorporated. Be the first to meet Felix and taste the sinfully seductive world of the FCS Inc. alphas before the series launches at the end of 2018.
